Costa Rica is more well-known for its coffee fields than its grapevines, but that didn’t stop the rumors from reaching us. The buzz had been building with regards to a relatively new, rustic, charming, family-run restaurant located in our old neighborhood, at the bottom of Calle Leon (Lion Street). As it turned out, Pizzería la montaña is only a few steps away from the coffee plantation casa that we were renting when our daughter Violetta was born in August 2011.
The beautiful combination of warm nostalgia with a tasty new dining experience proved to be irresistible. The views were spectacular, the food was delicious and affordable, and the overall experience was one to be repeated. Pizzería la montaña has a rural, family-oriented ambiance, complete with a petting zoo and hiking trails. There was plenty to keep the three of us entertained while we waited for our food to arrive.
Most of our “hang time” was spent petting, feeding, talking to, and playing with the goats on the property. Some of the spunkier kids busted loose from their pens to frolick and play, hamming it up for the restaurant guests. After enjoying a very satisfying meal, we walked it off on the senderos, timing it perfectly so that we caught several different sunset vantage points along the way.
Pizzería la montaña is a wonderful little restaurant that is off the beaten path. We’ll definitely be going back soon to enjoy another authentic Costa Rican campesino-style dining adventure. As an added bonus, one of our real estate clients lives on Lion Street as well! She’s a sweetheart and comes from one of the very best families in all of San Ramon. Her lovely little property is currently for sale for just $150,000, which is an EXCELLENT DEAL. Whoever buys this delightful home will have delicious pizza (and more) within a stone’s throw.
